Installation
Installing your natural shades will be a breeze if you follow these simple instructions. You will need a few simple tools. A screw-gun or drill with a screw tip is recommended for easiest installation. Otherwise, a screw-driver, an awl, and a pencil should be all you need. You may also need to furnish screws and/or special anchors suitable for the material to which the brackets will be fastened. Your local hardware specialist can assist you with this.
Inside-Mount Installation
• Unpack and lay out all parts included with your new custom shade. Be sure to check ALL packaging for hidden parts and or hardware.
• Locate the mounting brackets, and remove the wing-nuts.
• Hold the headrail of the shade up to the window. Using a pencil, lightly mark the position of the slots at both ends of the headrail (and center slots if provided) on the top of the window casement.
• Hold the bracket so that the threaded bolt is aligned with the pencil mark. Secure the bracket to the TOP of the window casement. Do not use the holes on the back of the bracket. Do the same for the other bracket(s).
• Place the shade so that the bolts of the brackets fall into the slots on the head rail.
• Center the headrail in the window opening.
• Place wing-nuts on the bolts and tighten until secure.
• With the shade in the up position, determine a safe height to mount the cord cleat.
• Secure the cleat to the wall or trim where it will be out of the reach of children and out of the operating path of the shade.
• Lower the shade. If the shade appears to be cut at an angle a simple adjustment is necessary. Simply tug on the material to realign the woven fabric. This may be necessary from time to time as the cloth is natural and hand-woven. Congratulations, you are now an experienced installer!
Outside-Mount Installation
• Unpack and layout all parts included with your new custom shade.
• Locate the mounting brackets and remove wing-nuts.
• Hold the headrail of the shade up to the outside of the window. Using a pencil, lightly mark the position of the slots at both ends (and center slots if provided) of the headrail.
• For Windows Measured With Trim: Hold the brackets so that the threaded bolt is aligned with your pencil marks and the top of the trim. Using the screws included, secure the brackets to the window frame or trim using the holes at the rear of the bracket.
• For Windows Measured Without Trim: Measure and mark two inches above the opening to accommodate light leaks as recommended in the measuring instructions at the time of order. Using a level, draw a light level line to the other side of the window. This line is where the top of the bracket is aligned when mounted. Secure the brackets to the wall using the holes at the rear of the bracket. Note: You may need longer screws or anchors to properly secure brackets.
• Place the shade so that the bolts of the brackets fall into the slots of the headrail.
• Center the headrail over the window opening.
• Place wing-nuts on the bolts and tighten until secure.
• With the shade in the up position, determine a safe height to mount the cord cleat.
• Secure the cleat to the wall or trim where it will be out of the reach of children and out of the operating path of the shade. (If the shade is mounted to a door, and you desire to secure the bottom rail to the door when in the fully lowered position, use of Velcro™ is recommended.)
• Lower the shade. If the shade appears to be at an angle, a simple adjustment is necessary. Simply tug on the material to realign the woven fabric. This may be necessary from time to time as the cloth is natural and hand-woven. Congratulations, you are now an experienced installer!
Shade Operation
• Cords operate the same whether installed on the left or right.
• To raise the shade simply pull on the cords to the desired height. Pull cords to the right to lock.
• To lower the shade pull the cords to the left and lower to the desired height.
• Should the shade raise or lower with difficulty or at an angle, the cords probably are misaligned. Lift the valance and insure that all cords are not tangled and are properly routed on the pulleys. All cords must be raised or lowered together to ensure even operation. If difficulties persist, call Earthshade for assistance at 413.528.5443.
Care and Cleaning
Your custom natural shades are simple to care for. Routine light dusting or periodic vacuuming with the brush attachment is all that will be necessary. Moisture should be avoided. However, should water come in contact with a shade, simply allow it to air dry with the shade in the full down position. Scrubbing with cleansers or blotting dry may permanently stain or deform the hand woven cloth. Natural sun bleaching or fading will occur over time to the outside of the shade. This is a natural quality inherent to the material.
At this point we would like to ask you to recycle or reuse the packing materials that your shades arrived in. We are continuing our efforts to replace these materials at the very least with those derived from recycled or sustainable sources. We thank you for joining our efforts to preserve and enjoy the beauty our natural habitat has to offer. We wish you pure enjoyment of your shades in a lifetime of good health.
