Oil-Based Finish
of
Pacific Rim Woodworking
Pacific Rim Woodworking uses a non-toxic hand-rubbed finish consisting of natural tung oil, and linseed-oil-based polyurethane (a liquid plastic — Varathane™ satin) that dries inert and has no off-gassing to cause problems for the chemically sensitive. For extra durability, pure bees wax is also added to the finish of “case goods” — items, such as dressers, night stands, accessories, wardrobes, and the cribs. All pieces can be ordered unfinished, as well.
The tung oil and linseed oil add a bit of honey-color to the finished pieces, but it mostly brings out the natural highlights in the wood. The actual colors of the finished pieces range from a lighter blond to a darker, slightly reddish tone. It really depends on the particular maple tree and age of the wood. Your piece will naturally and gradually darken over time.
For a sample of different shades of finished pieces see the images for the baby cribs. The many various pieces of wood used in a single crib actually show a great variety of shades. Yet all the naturally different shades are similar and complimentary. Of course, due to all the variables involved with images and different computer monitors it is not easy to be sure of exact shades of color. The differences in colors between the different photos are mostly due to lighting for the original photos and later image settings.
